2011 BUPA Great Birmingham Run - Half Marathon

Not everyday you get up close to Haile preparing for a race, but wearing a blue New Marske jacket made me almost indistinguishable from the Great Run staff in their blue jackets.  Despite appearing to struggle putting his shirt on, Haile was quite relaxed and chatting to spectators 5 minutes before the start of the race.  I had entered the race myself, what was to be first half marathon, only to pick up an injury a few weeks before.  Having only entered because I had, Kath was left to run the race on her own.

The men’s race was dominated  by New Marske men with Andy Wiles coming home 1st in a new  PB of 30:57.  Mark Shaw was 2nd close behind in 31:22, Russ Best 4th in 32:38,  Alan Piggford 6th in 34:50 and Jim Conaghan 1st v75 in 51:32.  A delighted Wiles said: “I was very happy with the time, I woke up at 5am on the morning and went out for a jog, it was chilly then, but it was certainly a bit warmer when the race got going. The wind was the main problem on the way out and the way back in.”  The men also took away the team prize.

On the journey down the Sat Nav sent us round in circles when picking Russ & Elliott up in Leeds meant we were late arriving in Warrington – which required a re hash of the running order

Great North Run 2011

New Marske Harriers were out in force at the Great North Run - but with more members on the water station than runners! But the runners produced some good performance - especially the first to finish. In the case of Bobbi this was her first road race beyond 5k and obviously had been putting in  some good training whist in the USA during the summer!
